Where Dunn came from
Dunn was born out of a conversation that too many sole traders will recognise.
A friend — a skilled electrician with over a decade in the trade — mentioned almost in passing that he'd written off nearly £6,000 that year. Not because the work wasn't good. Not because his clients were bad people. Just because chasing money felt uncomfortable. Awkward. Like it might damage the relationship he'd worked hard to build.
So he didn't chase. And the invoices quietly aged into nothing.
We looked at the tools available to help him and found products designed for accountants, built for finance teams, and priced for companies with HR departments. Nothing built for someone who spends their days on a job site and their evenings doing admin they'd rather not be doing.
So we built Dunn.
What we believe
Getting paid for work you've done shouldn't require confrontation, persistence, or a thick skin. It should just happen. The awkwardness of chasing invoices is a problem that technology can solve — and solve completely — if it's designed with that single goal in mind.
We believe that a sole trader running their business on their own shouldn't have to choose between preserving a client relationship and getting paid on time. Done right, a well-timed, professionally worded reminder does both.
We also believe that most people who pay late aren't bad clients. They're busy. They forgot. They needed a nudge. Dunn provides that nudge — politely, persistently, and automatically — so you never have to.
Who we're building for
There are 5.5 million sole traders in the UK. Electricians, builders, plumbers, designers, consultants, photographers, cleaners, therapists. People who are brilliant at what they do and who started their business to do that thing — not to chase payments.
UK sole traders write off an average of £8,200 in bad debt every year. Collectively, that's tens of billions of pounds that simply disappear because the systems to recover it don't exist, or are too complicated, or cost too much.
Dunn is built to change that. Starting with the basics — a reminder that goes out so you don't have to — and building toward something bigger: a full financial infrastructure layer for how sole traders get paid, build trust, and grow.
